What is detoxification?
Detoxification cleans waste deposits in the body, so that we feel refreshed and our energy levels rise...
We have all heard, certainly recently, of how the toxins from our everyday lives are being built up in our bodies. Through over indulgence, air pollution and over use of general household products such as cleaning fluids and air fresheners we begin to accumulate a toxic overload that slows us down and saps our vitaility. Reducing the levels of toxins in the body is detoxification.
Our bodies detox naturally every day. Detoxification is the normal process of eliminating or neutralizing toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin. However it is said that in the modern poluted environment our bodies cannot rid themselves of these unwanted substances fast enough and they're begining to build up in our tissues.
To achive true detoxification we should all live in a pollution free environment, eating natural food and drinking pure water. Sadly for many of us this is little more than an aspiration so until we achive the goal we should try to keep pollutants to a minimum, eat sensibly, and if possible follow a detoxification programme once in a while.

What benefits can I expect from a Detox?
A detox cleans waste deposits in the body, so that we feel refreshed and our energy levels rise. Signs that you need a detox include lethargy, poor skin, feeling congested, frequent headaches or joint pain, sinus problems, abnormal body odour, bad breath, a coated tongue or poor digestion.
How do I detox?
Mostly it’s common sense. Give your body a break for a few weeks to allow yourself to exercise, eat fresh simple foods and drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day.
Your diet should be low in fat with little dairy and no fried foods. You should also cut out or drastically reduce your alcohol intake.
How can Aromatherapy help me to detox?

Aromatherapy is the ‘art and science of using plant oils in treatment’. Aromatherapy is not, as you may think, just a fabulous fragrance which makes you feel good, but is also the application of blends of essential oils to skin. These are then absorbed by the body so that it has the full therapeutic benefit of these healing herbs and flowers. Certain essential oils are particularly helpful in a detox programme, these include:
- Lemon –has an ability to counteract acidity in the body, it is also a good general tonic to the digestive system, including the liver and pancreas
- Juniper – has been known since antiquity as an antiseptic and diuretic, it is one of the most important oils in detox especially in the area of the urino-gential tract being tonic, purifying, antiseptic and a stimulant.
- Grapefruit – is great for fluid retention, cellulite and other conditions where the toxins are not being eliminated effectively. It is a diuretic, detoxifier and a stimulant of the lymphatic system.
- Lavender – This is one of the most versatile herbs in aromatherapy and herbal therapy, it is an analgesic, antidepressant, antispasmodic it’s a sedative and an antiseptic. In the context of detox it is very helpful for digestive problems and also for its calming and normalising effect.
Detox help from Celtic Herbal
Detox does not have to be difficult. At Celtic Herbal we've created an aromatherapy Detox Bath Oil which not only has a blend of all of the oils listed above to ensure the greatest therapeutic and cleansing benefit of essential oils but also has a coconut oil based dispersant.
This dispersant makes the bath go cloudy as the oils gently blend with the water. The oils are then absorbed quickly and effectively into the skin leaving your body fabulously smooth and soft. The final benefit being no oil slick to clean in the bath!
